(My studio, where the magic… and some distinctly pirate-like cussing… happens.)
How do I summarize that which makes up my whole being in a few short paragraphs? I have never felt a particularly strong need for labels, since I am, and can only be, myself. Still, introductions are awfully tricky to write without them, and there are a few titles that I do not mind.
I am a mother of two beautiful beings of light. It is the most important, challenging and rewarding job in my life. My son came into this world in June 2008, and my daughter was born in November 2009. They have their own incredibly distinct and independent personalities, so full of spirit and geek, and are the precious shining stars in my husband and my lives. We have dedicated our lives to providing the best home we can for them.
I am a child of the Universe. It is my deepest belief that we are so very blessed to live on this tiny precious blue dot among the vast cosmos. I consider it my obligation to live my life as socially and environmentally conscious as possible. The Earth is currently our only home and it is our duty to take care for her.
To that end, I am a bit of a whole food nut and gardener. If I cannot make it in my kitchen, or grow it in my garden, chances are I am not going to be eating it. We make our own sourdough bread, grow sprouts, have an extensive garden, and adore our food co-op, butcher and farmer’s markets. I Will Not judge people who do not eat like we do because everyone comes with their unique preferences and backgrounds, but I do love to talk about healthy eating and living. If you think that eating this way is insanely costly and time consuming, chat me up to hear otherwise.
I am a geek. While astrophysics and plant breeding are my passions, pretty much any science is of at least passing interest to me too. In the realm of fiction, my husband and I love zombies and have lifelong obsessions with comic books. I have a soft spot for crossovers, with Blue Lantern Flash being my most loved hero. In the world of gaming I love tabletop games like Last Night On Earth, as well as console games. Dragon Age, Borderlands and Fallout being my favorites, and Left4Dead being my go to on a bad day. For a throwback, I dig all the Monkey Islands (I love love love pirates) and for some true nostalgia I play jacks when I feel like rejecting the digital world.
I am straddled somewhere between being a rockabilly and psychobilly. I adore 1950s fashion, music, style, manners and parties. On the flip side I also love tattoos, awesome hair colours, and more ghoulish things, like my skull collection. The Hillbilly Moon Explosion is one of my favorite bands, but then so is Frank Sinatra, Death Cab for Cutie and The Cure. I love vinyl records, pin curls, red lipstick and the smell of leather in a 1957 Chevy Bel Air. (Sadly I own a Ford Taurus. It has a pirate flag though!) I think Halloween decorations should be a year around affair as well.
I am a seamstress, knitter, crafter and general dabbler in any other creative work that grabs my interest. There is something that dwells deep in me that calls out to be allowed to learn and create. If I do not indulge this part of me I become a very cranky person indeed. I have an etsy store in which I sell my wares.
I love my life, and I love to laugh. I love the sunrise and set, the passing of the moon and stars, the warmth of my husband’s embrace, the flowing of the rivers and tides, the ever-changing aspects of nature, the facets of my inner dragon, and the simple joys that life has to offer. Thus far my life has been quite the journey and I know there is much more discovery to come. I am blessed to have my amazing children, my wonderful mate and my dedicated friends along this wanderlusting way.
